Drafts

FOLD saves what you write on the device first and stores it in the Drafts folder on your server when you close the message.

Saved on the device first

While you write, FOLD saves the message on the device about two seconds after you stop typing. On the Mac it also saves when you minimize the compose window. Each message you start is one draft: saving again overwrites it, so no duplicates pile up. A draft saved this way survives a crash, quitting the app and a missing connection.

If the message has no content yet, FOLD does not keep a draft, and an earlier saved copy of it is removed.

Stored on the server when you close

  • Mac: closing the compose window, with Esc or the close button, means Save as draft & close.
  • iPhone and iPad: Cancel asks Save draft? with Save draft, Delete draft and Keep editing.

Saving on close stores the draft in the account’s Drafts folder on the server, marked as a draft. If the server cannot be reached, the draft stays on the device. The Mac tries again at the next launch and after the first sync of an account; drafts that were only saved on the device, for example before a crash, are stored on the server at that point too.

FOLD finds the Drafts folder by the server’s special-use marking and otherwise by names such as Drafts or Entwürfe. If an account has none, FOLD creates one.

Discarding a draft

On the Mac, Discard draft asks Discard draft? and explains “The draft will be deleted and NOT saved to “Drafts”.” Choose Discard or Keep editing. On iPhone and iPad, Delete draft in the closing dialog has the same effect.

After a message has been sent, its local draft is deleted, because the message now lives in the outbox.

Continuing a draft

On iPhone and iPad, tap a message in Drafts to continue writing it. FOLD reopens a draft only if it is fully loaded; otherwise it asks you to reload it first: “The draft isn’t fully loaded. Reload it before you continue writing.” This protects you from sending a shortened text or a truncated attachment.

If saving fails, the compose window shows “The draft could not be saved. Please try again and keep the message open.”
