Attachments

Preview safe file types directly in FOLD and save everything else explicitly; on the Mac every saved file carries the quarantine flag.

Preview

Attachments are listed below the message with name and size. An eye symbol means that a click or tap opens a Quick Look preview inside FOLD; an arrow means that the attachment is saved instead.

FOLD previews only raster images, PDF files and plain text, and only if both the declared type and the file extension agree. HTML, SVG and XML files and all other types are never previewed, because a preview could load remote content and bypass FOLD’s protection against it.

File types that can run code, such as .exe, .app, .pkg, .dmg, .sh, .js or .jar, are marked with an orange warning symbol and never open automatically. On the Mac the tooltip says “potentially dangerous file type; it will not open automatically. Click to save.”

Save

  • Mac: right-click an attachment for Show and Save …. With several attachments, Save All writes them into a folder you choose.
  • iPhone and iPad: touch and hold an attachment for View and Save …. Saving opens the share sheet, where you can pick Files or another app. Save All hands all attachments to the share sheet at once.

On the Mac, FOLD sets the com.apple.quarantine attribute on every file it saves, including the temporary copy it creates for a preview. Gatekeeper therefore checks a saved attachment when you open it, just as it checks a download from a browser. The temporary preview folder is cleared before each new preview.

Incomplete attachments

FOLD checks every message when it arrives; see Offline and message integrity. If an attachment was not transferred completely, it is marked incomplete and the notice reads “wasn’t transferred completely. Reload the message before opening or sharing the attachment.” Incomplete attachments are never previewed.

If you still need the partial file, Save Incomplete Copy … saves it under a name that marks it as incomplete, so it cannot be mistaken for the original later. Save All skips incomplete and unreadable attachments and tells you how many it saved.
